Is a permit required for the removal of a tree on public or private property?

A permit is required to remove a Coast Live Oak Tree from public and private property. Approval from the Zoning Department is required before contacting the Forestry Department to remove a Coast Live Oak Tree.

Please note: If a tree (other than a Coast Live Oak) is on private property then a permit is not required, and the community member should contact an outside Arborist for removal. If a tree on private property posses an immediate risk for public safety, create a case for the Forestry Division under "Broken Branch or Tree".

Private trees that are obstructing the public right-of-way will receive an abatement notice issued to the property owner.

Public trees are exempt from the view ordinance.

The Forestry Division will not get involved with any conflicts between private parties regarding private trees, view issues, etc. Community members should contact SEEDS (Services that Encourage Effective Dialogue and s) Community Re Center for any disputes between neighboring properties.
